In the context of Singapore, there are several certifications that we can consider. This article will cover 2 main ones, and share advice on whether it’s advisable for one to take up the certification.
This post covers 3 types: SHRM, IHRP, and SHRI. The first is more global and focused in the US, while the latter two are specific to Singapore. SHRI does not have any HR certifications, but offers
1) SHRM

There are 2 types of certifications
- SHRM-CP: Certified Professional
- Individuals performing HR or HR-related duties in HR
- Current/most recent HR work is operational in nature
- Duties are specialised
- SHRM-SCP: Senior Certified Professional
- Individuals of a work history of at least 3 years, performing strategic level HR duties
- Current/most recent HR work is strategic in nature
Opinions:
- Great for those wanting to internationalise your experience and expertise
- A lot of the content they have under “learning” is tailored towards the US American experience E.g. 401k, “Active shooter” – things that would not be as relevant in the Singapore context
2) IHRP

2) SHRI
Find Out More: HERE
SHRI is a Singapore academy that’s registered with SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). There is no specific certification that it has (as IHRP is Singapore’s national HR certification), rather, they are a learning/training provider for HCM (Human Capital Management) programmes and practices for/by HR professionals.
SHRI’s uniqueness lies in its recognised and certified courses and academic programmes – ranging from various Diplomas to Masters. It also offers courses that contribute to CPD (Continuing Professional Development) hours that help
Whether or not one should take SHRI’s courses largely depends on several factors
- do you know what you want out of your HR career?
- which area of HR are you looking to further develop?
- what do you want to gain out of the module/course?
There are modules covered by SkillsFuture Credits, so if you’re looking for a way to utilise it – this would be a good idea.
This summarises a list of certifications and academic courses in the context of Singapore. There are other certifications for specific areas of HR (such as C&B), but we shall go into that in another post. Stay tuned!
